PRESS RELEASE - FEBRUARY 6, 2004
SHASTA WEST NEIGHBORHOODS FUEL REDUCTION
DAYS
FEBRUARY 28TH and 29TH AND MARCH 27TH and 28TH
Residents of the Shasta West Watersheds,
otherwise known as the Rock Cr., Middle Cr., Salt Cr., Canyon Cr.,
Oregon Gulch, and Olney Cr. watersheds, have an opportunity again
this year to dispose of woody material trimmed from home yards during
fuel reduction efforts. If you aren't sure if you live in the watersheds,
the major streets in the area are Rock Creek Road, Middle Creek
Road, Iron Mountain Road, Victoria Drive, Mule Town Road, Swayze
Drive, Lower Springs Road, Placer Road, and Texas Springs Road.
This is an opportunity to reduce
the wildfire danger in your area. Bring your woody yard trimmings
to the intersection of Swasey Drive and Gas House Hill Road on
February 28th and 29th or March 27th and 28th and help the Shasta
West Watersheds become fire safe.
Western Shasta Resource Conservation
District (WSRCD) with a grant from The National Park Service is
offering an opportunity for Fuel Reduction Days from 9:00 A.M.
until 4:00 P.M., February 28thand 29th , and March 27th and 28th.
The site for disposing of the woody yard trimmings will be the
intersection of Swasey Drive and Gas House Hill Road. The RCD
will have its chipper on site to chip material
brought to the site on those days (February 28th and 29th , and
March 27th and 28th).
Many residents of Shasta West have
expressed concern for the amount of fuel built up in their neighborhoods
and around their homes. There is also concern for disposing of
limbs and trees that have fallen from the unusually heavy snowfall
this winter. WSRCD is offering the opportunity for residents to
dispose of the woody material they have trimmed from their yards,
by providing a chipper to chip the material. This is an opportunity
to dispose of the woody material without burning it and impacting
air quality in the Redding Basin.
Creating defensible space around
a home by removing brush and trimming trees is the first line
of defense a resident can do to protect their property. CDF has
developed fire safe criteria, and thisinformation is available
from them at 875 West Cypress Avenue, Redding or from the Shasta
County Fire Safe Council web site: http://www.shastacountyfiresafecouncil.org/FireSafeTips.html.
Material acceptable for chipping
includes brush and tree trimmings only. NO grass, leaves, soil,
or garbage will be accepted. They will not go through the chipper!
Do NOT bring in material that has been raked,
as this material can't be put through the chipper either.
This is the third year a neighborhood
fuels clean-up day project has been offered in the Shasta West
area. In 2002, the response was so great WSRCD has secured the
funding from the National Park Service to
conduct the program again this year.
