ARE YOU READY, SHASTA COUNTY?

The Shasta County Fire Safe Council is your local wild fire safety resource!

Be firewise and fire safe in Shasta County. Our vision is to create an environment throughout Shasta County that is resistant to catastrophic wild fire.

Formed in 2002, the Council has successfully served as the forum for planning, funding, and implementation of outreach programs and construction of several fuel reduction projects. Nine fuel reduction plans covering all of western Shasta County have been developed and updated. The Shasta County Fire Safe Trailer is the centerpiece of the outreach program and is displayed at several events annually. Several shaded fuel breaks have been constructed throughout Shasta County. Examples include: the Rock Creek and lower Springs Shaded Fuel Breaks near Old Shasta and west Redding; Walker Mine Shaded Fuel Break near the City of Shasta Lake; Backbone Ridge Shaded Fuel Brak along the south boundary of the Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area; the Shingletown Ridge Road Shaded Fuel Break near Shingletown; the Archer Road Fuel Break near Igo; the Cassel Shaded Fuel Break near Cassel; and numerous others. Other fuel reduction work includes "chipper days" in Lakehead, on O'Brien mountain, and near Shingletown.

In spite of our successes, our work is never done. Many of the identified projects in the plans are on the shelf waiting for funding. All of the older projects are in need of maintenance. Natural or man caused wild fires continue to occur. Moreover, to make our work harder, grant funding has become severely restricted due to the current downturn in the economy.

YOU CAN BECOME A PARTICIPANT IN REDUCING THE THREAT OF WILD FIRE IN SHASTA COUNTY! If you are not already a member, you are invited to become a member of the Shasta County Fires Safe Council. members are an important component of our team, supporting the many programs that help our communities. If you do not wish to be a member, donations to support our efforts are greatly appreciated.
